Not Sure of What Type, Size Unit is for Your Family?
Generally speaking, the larger the unit, the more space,
privacy and comfort it will afford its guests. Also, the
larger the unit, the more costly it will be to rent and
operate. So, its important to fit the unit to your needs
and desires, especially for privacy when sleeping. Be
careful of smaller units which claim to sleep 5, 6 or
more. Check the size of the beds - adults need a full 6'
length for comfort. (Note to overseas guests: America is
one of the few places in the world which hasn't adopted
the Metric System, so be prepared to convert feet, miles,
gallons, quarts, acres etc. to units you can comprehend.)
Motorhome
A camping and travel vehicle, from 24 to 34 feet in
length, built on a self-propelled vehicle chassis.
Contains kitchen, sleeping, bathroom and dining
facilities, accessible to driver's area. Living systems
include electricity, heating, air conditioning, water and
propane gas. Sleeps 2 to 10 people. Living systems are
self-contained, but when staying at campgrounds, most
users hook up to electricity, water, sewer drain, even
cable television.
Mini-Motorhome
A scaled down version of Motorhome, from 20 to 28 feet in
length, built on truck chassis, usually with sleeping
hunks atop cab. Living area accessible to driver's area.
Sleeps 2 to 6, if you include children. Has fewer
features, less space and privacy than larger units, but is
more economical to operate and is easier to drive and
park.
Conversion Van
A regular. van with a raised roof, from 16 to 21 feet in
length, customized to include side windows, carpeting,
custom seats and accessories. Can sleep from 2 to 4
people, but has minimal kitchen or toilet facilities.
Travel Trailers
Not practical for overseas guests, or Americans who fly to
a pick-up point, since they require a heavy-duty vehicle
to pull them. Towable units, 13 to 33 feet in length, they
have full living facilities, but it's illegal to use them
while underway Best when parked at campground for extended
periods, while you use the towing vehicle for local
transportation and sightseeing. Check your rental dealer
to make sure your tow vehicle, hitch and wiring are
adequate.
Truck Campers
Camping unit mounted on bed of a pickup truck, 18 to 21
feet in length, including the truck. May have kitchen and
bathroom facilities, plus bunks to sleep 2 to 6 people.
Especially popular as rental units in Canada, for
wilderness use.
Folding Camping Trailer
A lightweight, towable unit with collapsible sides, 10 to
15 feet in length. When set up, they provide kitchen,
dining and sleeping facilities for up to 8 people. Check
your rental dealer to make sure your tow vehicle, hitch
and wiring are adequate. This unit is an option if you
want to spend part of a motoring trip camping out, using
toilet facilities provided at campgrounds. |
